  • Home Again

Well, I'm home again, after being gone for over three weeks. Its good to be home, I guess, but I sure do miss the beautiful weather in New Orleans and Phoenix. I had a great time, travelling and seeing the sights. The problem is, the more you get around, the more you realize what all there is to see. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to go again sometime.

Here are some pics from New Orleans. The rest of the family was there for a month, working under CASP, a division of CAM. Don't ask me what CASP stands for, I forget. Anyway, I was only there for a week or so, so some of these pictures were taken before I was there, but I wanted to give ya'll an overview of what our group did. The rest of the group was there for a month too, so I was just kinda a part timer.

A picture of the base we worked out of. We were actually in St. Bernard, which is a suburb of the city, further south.

Working? :) in the kitchen. The guy in the background chompin on a donut was the secretary there and has been there since November.

Here is one of the houses we worked on. I'm not sure how many jobs they worked on as a group in the entire month, but I worked on three while I was there, and I know there was a number of other jobs that were going on at the same time. Most of the damage was done by water from the storm surge and the levees that broke but there was some wind damage as well.

We didn't do any work on this place, but you still see a lot of this down there. Notice the empty lots on each side of the house. Many, many people still are nowhere close to being able to move back into there homes. There are still entire neighborhoods that are almost deserted and have only a few people living there.

Our group worked mostly on drywall,

     drywall finishing,

    flooring and trim,

    IMG_0152

and painting. It wasn't unusual at all for Kendall to come back looking like this in the evening after work.

It wasn't all work and no play though. I mean, what do you expect with getting twenty guys together for four weeks?

One of the ladies we worked for had this pool, so one afternoon, all the crews hung it up early and stopped by for a swim and some sun.

    IMG_2571

We went up to the french quarter on Saturday to just kinda snoop around, and then again on Sunday to sing in the public square. They had some kind of festival going and it was full of people. I have never seen so many people and so much alcohol together in one place. People weren't drunk necassarily, but there was an awful lot of drinking happening. There were bands playing and all sorts of attractions. One of which was this-

    DSC05303

the national oyster eating contest. How many raw oysters could you eat in eight minutes? This woman downed thirty-one dozen to come in at second place out of fifteen or so contestants.

    DSC05305

The winer was this man with thirty-five and a half dozen raw oysters down in eight minutes! That is a lot of slimy stuff sliding down your throat! It was kinda neat to watch, although kinda sickening at the same time. One of the contestants had a "reversal of fortune" in the middle of the contest. SICK

    IMGP3609

Here is a picture of the crowd across the street from where we sang on Sunday afternoon.

    IMG_0303

How long will it go until New Orleans is back to normal? Many people are already well on there way, while hundreds more have not even started. There is still a lot of work to be done.

  • Arizona

I've been wanting to do this for a little while now and finally got around to it. I'm in Phoenix, AZ right now, and wow, is it ever lovely weather here. I happen to be one of those strange people who thinks a person should go TO cold and snow, not the cold and snow come to you. I guess it comes from framing too many houses in cold weather, I don't know, but I'm not really a winter type of person. I love the weather here. Its been around 55 degrees at night and up to around 85 during the day with 5-10 percent humidity - very dry. Its been sunny every day since I got here 2 weeks ago and I am just lovin it. Anyway, I'm out here hangin out with my cousin. Its been great!

Here is a picture of phoenix from the top of North Mountain, A mountain about 500 feet high that we liked to bike out to (its only a 10 min ride from their house) and climb in the morning before breakfast or on sunday afternoons.

They work on maintenance in an RV court in the middle of the cityand I was helping with some of the projects. This is a picture of the court where they live.

    DSCF0005 DSCF0006

These are some pics of the main project we worked on : digging ditches to replace sewer lines that were going bad. We dug some 120 feet of trench by hand. Wow, what a workout!

    DSCF0011

We even got to cut some concrete and then burrow under 8 more feet of it where we didn't want to mess up the driveway.

    DSCF0033

My cousin, uncle, and myself went camping north of Phoenix one night. This was our campsite. It got pretty cold that night. It was down in the upper 20s. The climate changes pretty quickly as soon as you get out of the valley Phoenix is in.

    DSCF0036

    DSCF0037

These are just a few pics of up north in the area where we camped. Its mostly desert.

                                                    THE CANYON

    DSCF0043

The night after we camped we went on up to the grand canyon for the day. Its been my dream for a couple years now to hike down into the bottom of the canyon and I finally got to do that. WOW!! It was AWESOME!! Even if you have been to the canyon, it adds a whole new exciting perspective to hike it. There are signs warning you not to attempt to hike down and back out in one day becouse every year therre are people that try it and can't make it. We knew some pepole that had done it so we decided to go for it. We hiked the whole thing in about 7 hours, and it wasn't too bad although the last 3 miles or so my legs started cramping up pretty bad. The canyon is about 5000 feet deep at that point and the trails we took led us through about 17 miles of it. It was a hard hike, but definately worth every step!

    DSCF0048

            BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

We took the Kaibab trail down to the river. The next couple pics are from that trail. Its steeper than some of the other trails so we took that trail down and brought an easier one back up. The Kaibab has better views of the canyon itself because it kind of follows a ridgeline down into the canyon. The one we brought up was the Bright Angel Trail and it follows a side canyon up so the views out into the canyon aren't quite as good, but its greener and is still absolutely beautiful.

    DSCF0056

    DSCF0060

    DSCF0073

Notice the white on the cliffs at the top. Yes thats snow. Part of the trail still had ice on it and it was pretty cool at the top when we started down. you'll notice I was wearing a fleece. But if you look, its gone on the pic down by the river. The temperature varies quite a bit from the bottom of the canyon to the top. By the time we got halfway down, the sweaters were gone and we were breaking a sweat.

    DSCF0074

The trail gets interesting sometimes. Notice the sheer cliff up one side and steep down on the other side.

    DSCF0077

The canyon was pretty green, and we saw some very pretty flowers. I especially liked these cactus blooms.

    DSCF0087

    DSCF0101

Finally, the river. It was pretty dirty. I wish it would have been clean but oh well, maybe next time.

    DSCF0105

To give some perspective of the depth of the canyon, check out the pinnacle in the background of this picture. The top is still below the top by a good ways. Its definately not just a wlk in the park down in there and back out, especially not in one day.

    DSCF0120

Starting up the Bright Angel Trail.

     DSCF0123

    DSCF0128 DSCF0131

The trees and flowers on the Bright Angel trail were beautiful. It made a great contrast to the harsh walls all around.

    DSCF0143

Check out that little patch of green in the bottom of that canyon in the lower center of the picture. Yeah thats where the last pic was taken. We are still a couple hundred feet from the top. That patch is about halfway down the trail to the bottom.

    IMG_1239

The top at last!! Hey if anyone wants to do this, let me know, I'd love to do it again!!

Thats it for now. I'm headed to New Orleans tomorrow for a little over a week to hang out with the rest of the family for a while.

      Have a good one eveybody!

  • Febuary Winter

Well, I guess winter has come back again. Not as in cold, although we did have a colder snap again. It almost hit zero a couple nights ago. I think we had 4 degrees here. Thats the coldest it has been yet this winter here, but the snow and ice is worse than it was before. We didn't get a lot, only about 10 inches total, in the past week. It was just kinda ugly winter weather. I think it snowed or rained every day so far this week. And last week wasn't a lot better. Its raining again here, but at least the temperature is above freezing. O well, I guess the snowmobilers (is that a word?) had fun. Can you tell I'm not a winter person? I prefer the sun any day over snow\freezing  ain\wintery mix. I guess i've had to work in that stuff too long. I can't complain though. We've had it pretty good as far as working in winter weather this year.

    DSCF0017a

This is a picture of or house yesterday while it was snowing. No, its not foggy. Its snowing. Ok, it was getting dark too.

Here are a couple quotes from the book, In a Pit witha Lion on a Snowy Day. No I'm still not done with it, but I love some of the quotes.

"If you were to always act in your greatest self-interest, you would always obey God."

"There are basically two types of people in the world: complainers and worshipers "

"There are basically two approaches to life: playing to win and playing not to lose"

"There are people who get out of the boat and walk on the water. And there are people who sit in the boat and criticize wate walkers"

"Maybe its time for Christ followers to put on crash helmets and play offense"

"We need to stop criticizing culture and start creaing it."

Wow, I love those quotes. In a way. In another way I don't. It's a very challenging thought process.

Those are just a few of my favorite quotes. There are lots more.

        Have a great week, everybody.

  • My doins

Here are some pics of the house we just finished framing for Levi. Work is really slow here again. NOt sure what I'm gonna do the next few weeks. My weekends are packed out but during the week its pretty relaxed. Hmmmmm Maybe I'll have to go on vacation somewhere. We'll see. DSCF0060

Anyway, on a different note, if there are any of you that like to read and are into getting stretched a little, I've been reading a book called In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day. WOW You talk about stretching some of our comfortable Christian thinking! Its based on the story of Beniah in 2 Chronicles. One of Davids mighty men. It talks about how in life our greatest challenges are also the greatest opportunities and how we often create God in our image instead of letting Him create us in His image. In other words, God is too small for our problems, so we try to take a different way. Its a great book!

  • A Cabin?

For those of you that knew that Sam was building a cabin - Here are a few pics of it. We framed it last summer and they are just finishing it up now. Its a nice 'cabin' -Some over 4000 square feet. For those of you coming for the wedding , if you ask real nice, Sam might take you through it. It is beautiful on the inside. Dad has been pretty busy over there trying to get it finished up.
